Pattern Notes for Crochet Tote Bag – Engineer Tote Bag
- This pattern requires skill in reading charts and making crochet tapestry.
- The bag starts from row 1 at the bottom of the chart. Then, it is worked in continuous rows up to the top. You may use stitch markers, if necessary.
- The chart below is for the front side of the bag. Crochet half of the back side in black and the other white or gray corresponding to the front side’s color scheme.
- To make it look better, use single crochet in back loops and make yarn under instead of yarn over. Carry the yarn behind your stitches for a neater look.
- You can adjust the bag size by changing the hook size and yarn weight. You may also add or remove stitches from the pattern.
How to Crochet Yarn Under Single Crochet?
Single crochet is one of the basic stitches in crochet that every crocheter should learn. The steps are simple: insert the hook into the indicated chain or stitch, yarn over, and pull up a loop. Yarn over again and pull the yarn through the 2 loops on the hook. But have you heard of yarn under single crochet?
Yarn under single crochet is a variation of the single crochet stitch. It produces a different texture in your work. Instead of yarning over, you yarn under before pulling up a loop. This creates a tighter stitch with a neater appearance.

During the foundation part, it’s not yet necessary to determine which side will be the front or the back. As you progress to row 6, decide which side you want to use as the front and the back of the bag.
The front side is where you will apply the tapestry crochet technique for the lettering. The back side is just a plain division of black and gray yarn.
